Neurofeedback: An Alternative Treatment for ADHD

Neurofeedback brain training can be beneficial for children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who find it hard to focus, experience impulsivity and hyperactivity.

Web MD* explains: “You may have heard of ‘brain training’ to boost intelligence or memory. If your child has ADHD, there’s a type of brain training some researchers think may improve focus and help other ADHD symptoms too. It’s called neurofeedback or EEG biofeedback.” http://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/childhood-adhd/features/neurofeedback-adhd#1

Neurofeedback does not interfere with medication your child may already be taking. We will work with your doctor and do not advise your child stop taking medication without a doctor’s consent. But neurofeedback can reduce or possibly eliminate the need for medication and is an excellent alternative treatment for ADHD because it causes no harm or pain, is non-invasive and the results are long term. We provide neurofeedback services for ages 6 and up (including adults!).

Parents often tell us they notice their child is calmer and better able to control their emotions after beginning neurofeedback treatment. And teachers notice, too. They ask parents, “What changed at home?”

Neurofeedback Improves Brainwave Patterns

There are four different brainwave imbalances seen in individuals with ADHD. Imbalance of Theta, Slow Alpha, and Beta cause significant problems. A quantitative EEG assessment (brain map) is needed to find the area of the brain that needs training.

Cognitive Testing for ADHD

If you’re worried about your child’s behavior in school, we encourage you to look into neurofeedback (also called neurotherapy). It’s a natural treatment that is noninvasive, painless, long-term and can reduce or eliminate the need for medication. We consider your child’s mind and body as we seek to improve behavior and resolve emotional issues, and we work in conjunction with your child’s medical provider to find the best treatment plan specifically for your child.

We provide thorough testing for ADHD and have been successful at recommending accommodations for an IEP (Individual Education Plan) and 504 plan with the school district. Cognitive testing goes a long way toward encouraging school officials to make accommodations for your child’s IEP.

Give us a call at 801-855-7999 for more details. We offer a consultation by phone or in person to help you decide if neurotherapy is a good choice for your child or teen.
