The neurofeedback process begins with a full assessment, known as a brain map or Quantitative EEG (QEEG). This is done by placing a head cap on the individual. The head cap is lined with sensors that analyze twelve or nineteen areas of the brain. It records the various brainwave signals and how they communicate with each other. The brain map is then reviewed to identify the unbalanced areas or unhealthy patterns of the brain to determine the focus for the neurofeedback training sessions. A few days after the brain map is completed, we sit down with the client to review the results and set up a treatment plan for the training sessions.
To learn more about brain scanning, watch this TEDTalk “The most important lesson from 83,000 brain scans” by Dr. Daniel Amen, founder of the Amen Clinics.
This is exactly why we do Quantitative EEG assessment before we start neurofeedback training. Daniel Amen does brain SPECT assessments before he treats people. Even though we don’t use brain SPECTs, we are looking at the same areas of the brain using Quantitative EEG data. And we fully agree with Dr. Amen’s assertion:
After 22 years and 83,000 scans, the single most important thing my colleagues and I have learned is that you can literally change people’s brains. And when you do, you change their life. You are not stuck with the brain that you have; you can make it better on a brain-smart program.”
–Dr. Daniel Amen, psychiatrist, brain disorder specialist, director of the Amen Clinics, and a ten-times New York Times bestselling author.
Dr. Amen also states in this video:
“Without imaging, psychiatrists then and even now make diagnoses like they did in 1840, when Abraham Lincoln was depressed, by talking to people and looking for symptom clusters.
“Did you know that psychiatrists are the only medical specialists that virtually never look at the organ they treat?
“Treatment needs to be tailored to individual brains, not clusters of symptoms….Behavior is the expression of the problem, it’s not the problem.”
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for therapy or neurofeedback. Your treatment program should be tailored to your brain.
We are proud to be a premiere provider of neurotherapy in Utah. We are based in Clinton, Utah, with extension offices in Tremonton and coming soon to Salt Lake County and Utah County.
We’re board certified and have the best equipment to provide the MOST accurate brain map, resulting in extremely effective neurotherapy treatment. We include a quantitative EEG (QEEG) assessment, or brain map, with every mental health assessment we complete. We will show you your brain map and explain exactly which areas would benefit from neurotherapy. We offer neurotherapy in conjunction with counseling, or if you are not interested in counseling, we can just provide neurotherapy.
